DEAR EDITOR,
After reading the Sunday 27th KN article ” Who is the US$7B man”, I realised it certainly didn’t take long for us to officially join the elite group of countries, expert at shamelessly diverting millions/billions before or after the funds get to the treasury. Never thought this could ever happen in Guyana to this extent. No longer can we separate ourselves from the African continent in terms of pilfering. Now part of the same distinguished club. The Brazilians had their own oil scandal a few years ago, but that’s no comparison. We’ve outdone ourselves. Where did we learn to do this sort of thing so comfortably? This will just reinforce the negative stereotypes. The Trinidadians are less than one hour away from us by flight. This curse didn’t happen there, did it? At least not like this. Is it because they were dealing with the British Oil Companies and not Americans?
All of this is also tied in with all the other lopsided contracts from the Liza’s, Stabroek to the Parayas and everything in between. The foreign investors “read” us well from the beginning, still are; know our weak spots and shortcomings. Human Psychology.
At some point the owner(s) of the $7Billion will be unveiled. Without a doubt, he will be looking over his shoulders for a long time. Always wondering, never completely at ease. The best part is no longer can he enjoy the assets he has acquired, including any prime real estate waterfront property bought in Florida. COVID-19 is here and we are stuck. Everyone around them is a potential carrier and spreader of the virus. The days of open enjoyment are gone for everyone. As of the date of this article, no vaccine coming out has a complete lifetime guarantee. When it’s time to go, all assets still remaining will be left behind on earth. Everyone involved in this saga is not taking the assets with them. The big question is, even if caught, does Guyana have laws (will enforce any laws?) to put such people in jail for theft.
Lately, we’ve heard of millions/billions unaccounted for by members of the past regime. Will we see a complete follow-up with jail time, (make space) or are we stopping at just talking about all these vanished funds. Past and Future individuals found misappropriating funds should bear the same fate. But the best part is that there is: Karma. It always comes back to bite.
Yours Truly,
Chi Kansi
