Marcus Harwood, who goes by the moniker M.Artz, has been making waves with an emotional spoken word video that pays tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement.
The video seeks to highlight the oppression Africans face, not just in Guyana, but internationally as well. In the video he showcases deep-rooted African culture in Guyana, utilizing various landmarks and picturesque sceneries from all over the country. The entire video was shot in Guyana and is visually captivating.
Born in London England to a Jamaican father and St. Vincent mother, M.Artz grew up on the streets of London. He has been honing his craft over the years. At 45 years of age, today he is considered a seasoned writer/ performer who has been into things poetry for the past five years or so.
M.Artz started coming to Guyana about 10 years ago to conduct business but he recently came back in January to spend a few months. However, he ended up stuck here due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Surprised that racial tensions are predominant in these parts, he believes that the video can help to bring about some much needed change.
In describing his video, M.Artz said, “It’s brutally honest and takes on the constant harassment and brutality dealt out to members of the black community. It touches on the vicious beating Rodney King received some 30 years ago (from police in the US), suggesting nothing has changed as we continue to be oppressed.”
The video, M.Aartz said, was inspired by the murder of GEORGE FLOYD in the USA at the hands of law enforcement officers. Having grown up in the inner cities of London, he had had his fair share of dealing with police there. “George’s story is one of years of prolonged unjust discrimination and oppression,” he noted.
The video was directed and filmed by local videographer and photographer, Keon Hector and its sound track was composed by local producer, CFanatic. The spoken words are by M.Artz himself. It is visually captivating and makes the words being spoken even more poignant and extremely thought-evoking.
His objective is to have the video shown across the world on as many media platforms as possible.
M.Artz maintains that the #BlackLivesMatter movement does not serve to only highlight police brutality against African Americans but it highlights the marginalization of black minorities across the world. “It does not mean every life does not matter. We are simply saying that black lives matter too and when certain things occur we see why that slogan has to be there,” he added.
The video can be found on all of his social media pages: Instagram – @m.artz on, Twitter -@martzpoetry, and Facebook – M-Artz. It can also be found on YouTube using the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUk1s8_CD34.
