Says return to play this year unlikely
By Calvin Chapman
Decorated school and club basketball coach; Willon Cameron, during an exclusive interview with Kaieteur Sport, expressed his disappointment with the rising cases of the deadly Covid-19 virus locally.
He noted that with the current situation it would be tough for basketball to return to play in Guyana unless the country can get a dramatic grip on the spread of the virus.
At the start of the discourse he posited that, “First I want to thank God for life through this pandemic and I pray he comforts those that have lost loved ones.”
Coach Cameron who is in charge of President’s College school’s basketball and Bounty Colts revealed that 2020 was built up to be highly anticipated since his school’s under-18 team looked set for a repeat in the National Schools’ Basketball Festival after retaining their core players from the 2019 triumph.
The 2019 club basketball coach of the year mentioned that the pandemic put the brakes on the female basketball programme at PC as well.
The 30-year-old instructor, who has been perfecting his craft for a decade now, is also gutted that the contesting of the National Club Championship (Road to Mecca) will also have a giant question mark.
At the club level, Cameron shared that, “… with Colts we had begun our preparations for the National Club Championship in hopes of winning four consecutive titles”, while plans were in motion to restore Colts once dominant under-23 setup.
Coach Cameron iterated that everyone needs to do their part in combating the spread of the virus and, “I have been encouraging my players to stay safe by following the guidelines set out by the Ministry of Health.”
He also shared that maintaining a certain level of fitness is important and he has been encouraging his players to be fit as possible and to work on their skills as much as they can for those that might have access to a private court, hoop or facility.
The coach continued by saying that, “With the way cases are rising I don’t believe we’ll be able to play locally this year, however if cases can somehow subside by October, I’d love to have a tournament in December because it’ll be a full year without basketball.”
Cameron, who has won a total of eight tourneys in his coaching career, concluded by paying tribute to the health care workers, “I’d like to commend the workers that have been doing their utmost to treat patients. And, I would recommend that the authorities take a more stringent approach with regards to the curfew and in monitoring day to day activities at public places.”
