Bandits between Thursday night and Friday morning broke into a truck of a Wakenaam businessman and stole 350 cartons of cigarettes valued $1,248,219.
The matter was reported and an investigation was launched, which led to the arrest of three suspects- one from Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo and two from Wakenaam Island.
The suspects are presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
According to a police report, the alleged robbery was committed on Noon Persaud, 81, of Lot 22 Good Success Wakenaam Island.
Enquires disclosed that the incident happened between 18:30hrs on Thursday, 27th August, 2020 and 05:30hrs on Friday 28th, August, 2020.
Kaieteur News understand that on Thursday evening, Persaud secured his cigarettes along with other items in the tray of motor lorry GKK 5673 which was parked under a shed in his yard. He then went to bed.
The following day, about 05:30hrs, Persaud woke up and discovered a portion of his back fence which is made of zinc, was bent. Further checks were made and he discovered all the cigarettes from the tray of his motor lorry were missing.
An alarm was raised and the matter was reported to the Sans Souci Police Station.
An investigation was launched and on Friday around 14:00hrs, police acting on information went to Good Success Centre Ground where they recovered 318 cartons and 8 packs of cigarettes.
The items were taken and lodged at the police station.
Further investigations were carried out which led to the arrest of the three suspects.
