Police ranks, on Thursday last, shot and captured a known offender who was reportedly wanted for the murder of Navindra Samaroo.
Samaroo was a marketing agent who was shot and killed on Middle Road, La Penitence last month.
The wanted suspect, Wayne Castello, 27, of 333 East Ruimveldt, was captured at around 20:05hrs at a Genip Lane, East Ruimveldt.
Police said that they had received information of the wanted man’s whereabouts in the area and decided to pay a visit.
Castello was at a roadside when he saw the ranks approaching.
He immediately attempted to mount a black motorcycle and ride away but the ranks saw this, stopped and disembarked their patrol vehicle.
Realizing that he was trapped, Castello reportedly pulled a gun from his waist and began shooting at the lawmen.
The ranks returned fire and a bullet struck Castello on his foot.
The wanted man fell to the ground and the ranks seized the opportunity to relieve him of the gun. He was then transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for medical treatment.
Kaieteur News tried contacting Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum yesterday to ascertain more details but he was unreachable.
According to reports, on the day Samaroo was killed, this newspaper was told that he was heading back to work in a Toyota Spacio motorcar.
While driving through Middle Road, he slowed down to manoeuvre a pothole. Two men rode up on a motorcycle beside the car. The pillion rider appeared to have demanded something before pulling out a gun and shooting Samaroo.
The man then jumped off the bike and grabbed something through the car window before speeding away with his accomplice.
Samaroo died sometime after.
Details about the perpetrators were sketchy and investigators spent hours that day reviewing video footages from nearby CCTV cameras.
Sometime later, Kaieteur News was told by a source that police had detained a man for questioning. According to the source, the man was Navindra’s best friend, a bike mechanic from Albouystown.
Some speculated that he might have been the mastermind behind the robbery. However, police did not find much to implicate the man in the crime and he was subsequently released.
