– Three deaths on Friday, no info on victims
On Friday last, Guyana recorded three new COVID-19 deaths pushing the death toll to 35 and despite being repeatedly pressed for details by the media, the Health Ministry has failed to release important details about the victims, and has remained silent on key issues relating to the pandemic.
Up to press time, no such information has been made public.
August is already being labelled as the deadliest month Guyana has seen since the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic touched the shores back in March -with a total of 15 deaths recorded.
A Kaieteur News analysis recently done by journalist, Kemol King, showed that for this month, one in every four Guyanese who took the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test yielded positive results.
The numbers continue to rise and Guyana shot passed the 1,000 mark with a total of 1,184 confirmed cases recorded and a total of 8,079 tested as of yesterday.
With the way the statistics is looking, Guyana appears very far from flattening the curve.
The Health Ministry’s silence on the matter is a cause for major concern. Rumours of contaminated tests and the virus being a ‘hoax’ are just among the issues the Health Ministry has had to deal with of recent.
The new administration, when they took office, has slackened the COVID-19 curfew moving it to 9pm – 5am, an hour later than the previous.
They also allowed mining activities to be resumed despite a high number of cases in those regions.
That move was not well regarded by many who took the view that providing more time would only aid the spread of the virus.
The Ministry in a release had said that the extension was meant to allow further assessments and consultations on the development of updated protocols leading to the systemic opening of Guyana’s economy.
Further, they stated that the Government of Guyana has initiated a complete overhaul of the current public health response system and have taken into consideration multiple approaches used in other parts of the world, particularly in the Caribbean.
These measures seem to not be of any consequence, as Guyanese traverse local bars and pack the seawalls and other areas, not practising proper social distancing measures or even, wearing a mask – despite a hefty fine being placed on those who disobey.
