ExxonMobil country President conjures impressions of a slave master

Dear Editor,

Like most Guyanese, I was shocked to learn that the President of ExxonMobil Guyana, Alistair Routledge, threatened this nation, a sovereign state, when he said that the company would take its investments elsewhere if it doesn’t get what it is looking for during negotiations on the Payara Field Development Plan.
Editor, I am not only appalled that Routledge would take his arrogance thus far but I am more so troubled as to the impressions his behaviour conjured; impressions of a slave master who wants to beat us into the ground, who wants to continue to rape us of our resources, and leave us with barren lands as he walks away with the riches for his people. When will we stand up against this? When is Guyana going to see ExxonMobil for what it is and demand what it deserves? When will we bring an end to the crass attitude of this company? If we don’t do something about this today, I am afraid we will be leaving a Guyana that will have nothing to offer future generations.
