Dear Editor,
Please permit me space in your media to share and or raise some concerns pertaining to COVID 19 in our country. Firstly, our education sector is in serious trouble as it relates to the delivery of education from nursery to university and our nation is severely suffering especially our younger population. Though some effort is made to deliver education through the internet to our populace, lots of families will tell you that it’s not working for them because they are either affected by “no internet”, “can’t afford Internet”, ” don’t have the necessary computer or tablet”, and such like.
I am suggesting that the One Laptop Per Family program and the free e-governance internet drive (which was started by Vice President Jagdeo when he was the President), would have been a plus to this e-learning situation, maybe with some adjustment.
Secondly, what happened to that piece of legislation where media houses have to give free airtime for public service announcements or something of the sort. The ANPU+AFC government led by then Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo did table something to this effect and was approved by the Legislature. If such does exist, isn’t the current COVID 19 pandemic a need for this to be put in place? Thirdly, I have seen via the media, persons charged and placed before the courts for breaching the various COVID-19 guidelines but yet I see daily gatherings at the creek, seawall, often “protest” and “support” for one reason or another and all happening within sight of the police. Take the Georgetown seawall for example. The police headquarters is in that same area but no action is taken. Is this too much for Police Commissioner Nigel Hoppie? Fourthly, I see on a daily basis over crowded public transportation with police on the roads controlling traffic but yet most of these guilty persons, passengers and drivers are allowed to go without even a warning. What’s happening here? Only Sunday 23rd August, I passed an out of zone minibus stopped at Providence Police Station. This bus was fully loaded to such a capacity that at least one young lady was sitting on someone else. I saw this from the gas station opposite. I now see that the Health Minister is saying that persons will be charged for failing to wear mask in public. Who is policing that?
Yours truly,
F. Ali
