Letter to the Sports Editor
Dear Sports Editor,
The people of Aurora and its environs would be sincerely grateful if their government can purchase a portion of land and develop same for the purpose of a sports ground. It must be mentioned that promises were made by governments and those who held high offices generations back, but to this day, all those promises seem to be gone with the wind. However, the residents are optimistic that this administration will ensure this plea becomes a possibility.
Aurora, which is a populated community found on the Essequibo Coast, has an abundance of talented youths who are eager to excel in various sports disciplines, but the absence of a ground is providing a barrier to their development. Having a sports ground would not only provide an avenue for the youths to nurture their skills, but will surely assist greatly in eradicating the many social ills of society.
Furthermore, a sports ground in this community will economically enhance the well being of residents. Small business ventures can be established which will assist in improving the quality of life of the entire community. The ground can also be used for other non-sporting activities such as melas, pageants, school sports, concerts among other beneficial activities. This community is also the home of one of Essequibo’s rising cricket teams, the Aurora Knight Riders. A simple check on facebook would reveal the impact this team is having on the youths as well as other members of society.
It is for these reasons and more, the residents are ‘begging’ their president Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali, who himself would have played a game of cricket with former Guyana captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and others on the island of Wakenaam sometime back, to do all in his ‘powers’ to ensure this dream become a reality.
Yours respectfully,
P. Persaud.
