DEAR EDITOR,
Guyanese are upset with the apparent broken promise of renegotiating the oil contract. The honeymoon is over with disastrous appointments and the handling of oil contract. There were a lot of comments on social media about the oil contract and Payara review. But the biggest shocker was the announcement of the latest round of appointments. Social media lit up Monday night. People want to vomit; I never saw so much negative reaction and obscene rage. The appointments set off phone calls; there is anger everywhere. What is wrong with the government? Why so many blunders so soon? Why these political suicidal acts so soon? They ask when will it appoint truly deserving, competent personnel in their field? If the country lacks expertise, and it does not, why not approach the diaspora?
There is no support for the latest round of appointees except for one female back at Foreign Service. PPP supporters are worried that the party has begun to lose support. It is back to Jagdeo cronyism and nepotism to maintain control. Competence and integrity are out the window; these are not prerequisites for appointments under this new government. It is continuation of where it left off in May 2015. If PPP calls an election right now, just two weeks after the declaration, it would lose seats over some of the appointments and non-appointments – square pegs in round holes. Back to opposition for Jagdeo and PPP supporters! People are calling for rescinding of appointees. Jagdeo should go to social media to get a feel of reaction from PPP supporters. They unanimously reject his nephew-in-law. It is bad news.
Neighbours were commenting with one another early Tuesday morning and people were exchanging views on buses, on the road, and at workplaces about Jagdeo’s latest appointees. One who was a failure in foreign affairs and did not bring votes from her constituency in 2011 or 2015 is rewarded with a promotion. She fixed herself to a big UN position in Rome and ‘bruk bush’ when PPP lost. It is about self rather than nation.
The nephew-in-law is back. It is very disturbing. Everyone is talking about gold bars and the shipment of gold seized in Curacao (tons?), rain forest deals, Bai Shan Lin, TV and radio stations, land at Pradoville sold for US$ millions, abandoning PPP and going over to APNU, owning properties in Florida and Long Island all paid for in cash. That character also caused PPP to lose seats in 2011 and 2015. Corruption and betrayal is rewarded. What caused Irfaan or Jagdeo to make this blunder? There will be more gold bar and rain forest scandals. For old people to complain about this appointment means PPP in big trouble. Granger should never have overstayed five months. He might have been back in office now over the appointment of this ‘wutless’ character. How long would this government last?
Another appointee who hardly did anything during the campaign or the five months impasse is CEO of a government corporation (reward for the work of her father? Ok he worked).
Looking at the oil contract review and these appointees, would the government last very long at the speed it is going. Many are asking whether the exchange in administration is worth it? Wouldn’t the country have been better off leaving Granger and his bunch of cronies? One bunch of misfits and crooks replaces another set. No benefits for the nation and for those who really fought publicly and behind the scene for the change in government.
Yours truly,
Boysie Mangru
