Dear Editor
For the past couple of days Kaieteur News has featured the opinions and comments from Melinda Janki and Jan Mangal, both experts in the petroleum business who feel that the choice of the former Premier of Alberta as a consultant is a grave error on the part of the current government. Both Ms. Janki and Dr. Mangal in yesterday’s article, (“Appointment of Canadian Consultant has all the hallmarks of the oil curse”) clearly feel Ms. Redford lacks the qualifications, experience and integrity needed to deliver an accurate and unbiased report on the Payara Project.
It is clear from the comments, the two aforementioned experts feel her company will not provide the type of report our government needs to make an informed decision. Dr. Mangal’s statement, “Do the Canadians take the Guyanese for fools?” is a clear indication that he feels Canada is out to cheat the Guyanese by getting involved where they clearly are not welcomed. Ms. Janki was no less harsh in her condemnation of the Canadians. She stated that the Canadians lacked the loyalty to Guyana and technical skills needed to correct ExxonMobil’s field development plan and the offer of the Canadian Government’s grant was an attempt to insert their people into Guyana’s Petroleum Sector.
I urge Kaieteur News to please convince our Government to refuse this grant from the Canadians who according to Ms. Janki and Dr. Mangal, do not have our best interest at heart and we will only end up making a similarly bad decision as was done by the previous government.
Since Ms. Janki and Dr. Mangal have our best interest at heart, I urge the PPP/C government to engage their expertise in this Payara Evaluation and dismiss the Canadians who are only interested in getting their hands on our resources despite their vast reserve of Petroleum. I am quite surprised Ms. Janki and Dr. Mangal were not consulted when the previous government literally gave away our precious resource to ExxonMobil for little in return. If they were, I am sure we would have received a better deal. We cannot make that mistake again, KN. Please use your influence to bring our government to its senses.
Yours truly,
Dennis Balgobin
