DEAR EDITOR,
In reference to the article on “Key Areas, Govt. must address” by Kiana Wilburg. The Analysis was superb, in a nutshell, hitting all the key points.
Let me add that to get some of the items mentioned in the article accomplished; Guyana needs the right people, not only with the relevant working experience and skillset, but individuals who have actually been working in the Oil Sector, for a number of years. I would suggest with a minimum working experience of five years. Unfortunately, the majority of them don’t reside in Guyana as this is a new sector for the country.
I would recommend that we poach Guyanese living abroad, however 99% of Guyanese outside of Guyana don’t make their livelihood in the Oil Sector, so alternatively we look within the oil states in the US, example Texas/Oklahoma and surrounding areas that have more than enough people in this field with the right skill sets.
Most of the companies that employ people in these states are Oil Companies, that have been in business for over 6O years, and have a lot of their corporate offices in these two states, not to mention other companies with various supporting infrastructure to support the oil sector. My point is, poach skilled people from oil states.
Since most Americans jump at the opportunity to come to the Caribbean, I don’t see a problem recruiting from the US. The other option is to recruit skilled individuals from surrounding Oil producing countries in the Caribbean, example Trinidad. Guyana should also expect these individuals to transfer their skills to the local population. The oil sector is a very precise field, and frankly, unless an individual has actively been working in this sector for years, it’s in Guyana’s best interest to get the best of the best, and those are the people that actually have the work experience. No time to waste!
Yours truly,
Chi Kansi
