Sase Gunraj should be the next Speaker of the National Assembly

Dear Editor,

It is with great enthusiasm that I pen this letter to express the winter of my discontent at the misgivings that would have transpired over the last five months, now a stain on Guyanese history. However, it is not without a certain level of gratification that I commend the acts of many brave and courageous Guyanese who stood their ground in the face of diversity and the selflessness which was demonstrated in the struggle for democracy.
Recognition must be given to the smaller parties and groupings (I recall the Guardians of Democracy) as well as our international partners: the ABCE countries, CARICOM and other leaders and the various electoral observer missions who remained steadfast in fulfilling their mandate. I was overwhelmed with emotion when H.E. President Ali recognised the stalwart in the late former Prime Minister Owen Seymour Arthur, Head of the Commonwealth EOM, at his Inauguration Ceremony.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, I feel proud as a Guyanese to recognize the emergence of a particular fellow countryman and fighter for democracy: Commissioner on the Guyana Elections Commission, Sase Gunraj.
This gentleman was always very vocal especially after tense and heavily scrutinised meetings of GECOM but more so, showed his real spirit in his actions commencing at the Ashmin’s building the dreadful day when the now infamous Clairmont Mingo, aided and abetted by his Svengali superiors and masters, declared for the first time, a fraudulent Region 4 result. Since then, I have been most keen to follow in the actions and commentaries of Gunraj whether through public statements or on social media. His eloquence, careful reporting and his general take as a Commissioner on the situations of the moment were widely anticipated. His frustration was usually evident but his composure and conviction remained true all the way to the end, when on the 2nd August, 2020 he posted on Facebook: “BREAKING… Lowenfield submits report using recount numbers. The PPP/C has won these elections. Dr. Irfaan Ali will be sworn in as President. PNC Commissioners walk out.” which was followed by the Declaration of the Chairman shortly thereafter. I could only imagine how he must have felt in this moment, not only for himself but for what his work would have culminated in. That kind of feeling surely will reside in him for eternity.
Gunraj is a stellar example of the leadership we need in this country. The new government is installed and I would sincerely hope that serious consideration can be made in appointing him as the next Speaker of the National Assembly. I, like many others I have observed, believe that his qualifications, conduct and decorum make him the best candidate for this very important position in the National Assembly.
Mr. Gunraj, you did all of Guyana proud. I support you now and in the future and look forward to a new beginning for Guyana and its people.
