The sojourn into a legal merry-go-round has so far been disastrous for the Granger administration anxiously seeking respite from a sympathetic court. The Court of Appeal, which in the recent past made a few baffling judgments in favor of APNU+AFC is their last hope, and any shred of approbative decision will be fiercely ballyhooed to justify their bizarre claim to victory. On the contrary, a decision that fails to conform to their hardened position will be treated with scant respect. The recent attacks on judges of the CoA is a precursor to what could happen in the event of an unfavorable outcome.
The Chief Justice’ recent judgment against APNU+AFC is already being dismissed as “irrelevant,” and the CCJ’s carefully constructed decision, when not mischievously misrepresented, is scorned upon as unwanted interference into the legal affairs of a sovereign state. In fact, AG Williams’ pathetic presentation at the recently convened OAS meeting referred to the Apex Court’s existence as the brainchild of the PPP/C government, dangling the suggestion of bias by the premier Caribbean Court.
A constitutional crisis is looming because Granger has declared that he would not accept any court decision that fails to recognize Mingo’s infamously flawed tabulation. Granger now disavows the results of the Recount, which emerged from an agreement between him and Jagdeo, brokered by the then CARICOM Head, Prime Minister Mia Mottley.
Marooned on an island of their own making, being ostracized by CARICOM, the OAS, EU, the Commonwealth, and with the US and Canada already imposing a diplomatic squeeze, Granger and his cadre of loyal soldiers are doubling down, becoming more strident in their poison-tipped remarks. False assurances, pig-headed obstinacy and political skullduggery have given way to hostile attacks and threats, the latest against GECOM’s Chairperson with the clear intent to thwart any attempt by her to perform her constitutional duty.
No one who dares appealing to the APNU/AFC government to step aside to allow for a smooth transition of power is spared from invectives, innuendos, and character assassination. The false narratives and highly charged language of leaders of APNU/AFC are undoubtedly stirring up bitterness, anger and hate in an environment of sharp racial division and mistrust. A boiling cauldron of frustration and bitterness is sizzling beneath a disquieting calm.
Once more, the rancid smell of “black gold” threatens to impose a curse on another country, Guyana whose rulers, driven by an obsessive thirst for power are bent on subverting the democratic process to seize power. The shameless power grab in the face of worldwide condemnation exposes the moral turpitude, and muddled thinking of a political clique terrified by the prospective of losing out on the management of a projected oil bonanza.
Yours truly,
Ramdular Singh
