Dear Editor,
I read in the media that the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) is not processing sickness and accident claims from sugar workers since the commencement of this year due to Guysuco’s indebtedness to the Scheme.
If this is true, it is grossly unfair to sugar workers who will be made to suffer through no fault of theirs. These workers have legitimate, and I believe lawful expectation to receive whatever benefits are due to them by virtue of their anticipated contributions to the National Insurance Scheme by their employer.
I think the NIS has an obligation to issue a statement on this matter, which potentially could affect the lives and well-being of a significant number of subscribers.
