Following a successful 2019 season when the Monroe College Mustangs made history by landing five of just 14 total student-athletes on the first-ever College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® College Division At-Large Teams, the Mustangs have made history once again in 2020 with two Guyanese contributing majorly to the school’s success.
Guyanese Sophomore middle-distance athlete; Joanna Archer, of both the women’s cross country and track and field teams was selected as the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for the women’s at-large division.
Archer becomes the first-ever Monroe College student-athlete to be named an Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year. The 800m-1500m specialist boasts an impressive 3.90 GPA through her two years as a criminal justice major at Monroe and she is a six-time NJCAA Division I Track and Field National Champion, having been a part of the national champion 4×800 relay teams at the 2019 Indoor, 2019 Outdoor and 2020 Indoor Track and Field Championships, the 2019 indoor distance medley relay championship team, and having won the national title in the 800m at both the 2019 Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Archer’s accolades also include being a seven-time NJCAA Track and Field All-American, an eight-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American, and a two-time USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Female
Track Athlete of the Year (2020 Indoor, 2019 Outdoor).
Archer has earned Monroe President’s List recognition in all four of her semesters, qualified for the 2019 NJCAA All-Academic Second Team, and her perfect 4.00 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year will earn her a spot on the 2020 NJCAA All-Academic First Team when those teams are announced next month. On the men’s side, triple jumper Lloyd McCurdy earned his spot on the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America® College Division Men’s At-Large Team.
McCurdy has made a big impact at the national level in his two seasons at Monroe, while also amassing a 3.67 GPA in his major of computer information systems. McCurdy won the national championship in the triple jump at the 2019 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, and took second place in the event in both the 2019 NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the 2020 Indoor Championships. Because of his accomplishments, McCurdy is a three-time NJCAA Track and Field All-American and a three-time USTFCCCA Track and Field All-American.
During an invited comment with Kaieteur Sport, Archer shared, “I just want to let it be known to my fellow athletes back home that it is possible to be a scholar and a superb athlete, you just have to want both bad enough. I’m not saying it’s easy but it definitely is worth it.
It’s important that we as student-athletes trust ourselves, trust the process and find a way to balance our passion (sports) with what I think will benefit us more in the future (education). People will doubt us, they will try to discourage us but we have to put on our mental blinkers and focus on what we set to accomplish.”
“It feels awesome to make history off the track, so thank you to the people who never doubted me; my coaches, my family, my friends, my supporters but most importantly I would like to thank God for changing my perspective on life and giving me a purpose in both aspects of my life ( athletics and academics).
Special thanks you to my grandmother that ensured I got up and go to school every day even if it took her last dollar, she ensured the stigma attached to ‘market kids’ didn’t paste itself on me, she sacrificed herself many times for me to go to school and training and I dedicate this award to her because without her selflessness I wouldn’t have been who I am today.”
