Dear Editor
I wish to begin this short contribution by asking two simple questions: (1) Why are Guyanese women so absent in the history of Guyana and (2) why are women leaders in civil society, government, the public sector, academia and private sector and religious bodies deafeningly silent in the face of abuse meted out the Chairwoman of GECOM, our female health workers and those women who have are physically, mentally and emotionally abused by their spouses post COVID-19?
It appears to me that organizations such as Red Thread, Help and Shelter, Women Across Differences and women’s rights advocates such as Vanda Radzik, Danuta Radzik, Jocelyn Dow, Karen DeSouza, Raquel Thomas-Caesar, Sherlina Nageer, Melissa Ifill and others have suddenly lost their voices. It is sad that these advocates and activists have conveniently decided not to speak out against and demand justice for women who have either been the target of partisan driven threats and verbal abuse such as non-other than the Chairwoman of GECOM, Dr. Helen Imhoff who was allegedly physically assaulted by a politician, women who struggle daily with domestic violence, too many of whom have been injured or lost their lives since the increase of COVID-19 in Guyana and other women who are on the front line providing health and critical care services.
Where are the online platforms dedicated to different topics and concerns of interest to all Guyanese women? Where are the voices of our women or is it that you are afraid that you will suffer a similar experience as that of Nageer, who was threatened to be slapped and stripped by Bheri Ramsarran, former Health Minister of Guyana?
We are living in a new era of Guyana. You have a remarkable opportunity to use information communication technology and online platforms such as Zoom to conduct trainings and discussion sessions for women by women from all walks of life in Guyana. Why isn’t this happening?
Sincerely
Gloria Singh-Enloe
