DEAR EDITOR,
The war against the Covid-19 virus is being fought by awareness and counter-measures. This has decreased the fatalities in many countries where the guidelines are followed. We are vigilant in recognising its symptoms for the preservation of our lives by publicising the outbreaks. But what have we done when we “Hear Auntie Beth a halla”?
Does our silence during her years of being abused make us complicit when the animal in the guise of a man eventually murders her — our sisters, mothers and daughters? We should be haunted by the number of times these women died and the daily humiliation they suffered and endured to hold on to the sacred life that was granted to them. This is especially troubling after the many reports of women brutally murdered over the last few months.
The woman who cooks, cleans, cares for our children and comforts us should not be abused if life does not go our way. She has nothing to do with our team’s or political party’s loss. And drunkenness, frustration or anger is not and will never be a reason or excuse to abuse her or anyone. If we are truly men, we must respect, protect and be kind to our women at all times. Above all, we, in our silence, may be enabling the abusers and murderers of our women. The seriousness of this matter should not be blunted by a flippant anecdote.
Sincerely,
Stanley Niamatali
