The Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) has indicated that it will be looking to run off round two of the Endurance Championship as soon as the state decides that the country should come out of its partial lockdown.
Speaking to head of the club, Rameez Mohamed, yesterday, he shared with Kaieteur Sport that, “Whenever the curfew is lifted, we will be looking to run off an Endurance meet no more than two weeks after.”
However, fans will not be permitted to be at the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri, to witness the three-hour battle amongst the 1500cc to unlimited cc machines because the club is cognisant of the eminent threat of the coronavirus disease.
Mohamed explained that fans should not be discouraged since there will be setting up a professional live-stream feed at the track that will be also be available social media.
The sports industry has been hit very hard by the pandemic but some leagues and associations inclusive of Formula 1 along with the German and English football leagues have dates in the near future that they have set for a return to competition behind closed doors, and like them, the GMR&SC is also looking to gradually return to normalcy as well with strict adherence to health officials guidelines.
The proposed Endurance meet will not be short of entertaining for the viewers with the club also sharing with Kaieteur Sport that a five-lap street car shoot-out is also being mooted.
So, far, the idea has been greeted by much fanfare by racers and fans alike and the promise of competitive motorsport locally following the last meet; the National Race of Champions, in February is highly anticipated.
The first round of the Endurance championship on January 28th was curtailed after unlimited class driver Ravi Singh narrowly escaped his machine after it caught fire during the latter stages of the race. Luckily, Singh only had to endure minor burns after the incident and has soon recovered. (Calvin Chapman)
