DEAR EDITOR,
The national recount is proving to be a huge embarassment not only to the APNU-AFC but the GECOM Secretariat. The near match between the Statements of Recount (SORs) and the Statements of Poll (SOPs) in possession of the PPP and released to the public is now posing some serious credibility issues for GECOM particularly with respect to Region Four.
My sense is that as the recount progresses the disparaties will become even more apparent which will serve to substantiate the position taken by the PPP that it won the elections by a comfortable majority.
There is a way out of the dilemma. President Granger could suggest to GECOM that the process of the recount be halted and restricted only to District Four which inevitably will substantiate a PPP/C victory. Resorting to ‘redherrings’ and other forms of frivolous and largely unsubstantiated objections will not materially change the outcome of the elections except for casting an element of ‘doubt’ over the integrity of the elections which incidentally President Granger has already pronounced as being fair and credible. This is unlikely to change the narrative of a flawed declaration of the Region Four results by the Returning Officer. And while there is no such thing as an entirely flawless elections, the important and critical factor is whether such flaws, real or imagined, are enough to materially change the outcome of the elections.
The APNU-AFC and President Granger stands to gain from accepting the results of the elections and conceding that it lost the elections. The winners in the end will be the people of Guyana. The country will continue along a democratic trajectory which will earn the full respect of the local and international community.
This elections transcends the confines of party politics. It is about the future of Guyana. A democratic and credible election is the only win-win situation which should be accepted and embraced by all.
