Terrence Archer and Diane Ferreira-James heads 10 Sports Personalities inducted
By Franklin Wilson
It is always a good thing to heed good advice and in this instance, the famous Tradewinds, led by Guyanese Dave Martins had sung the hit, “Where Are Your Heroes”. Not wanting to be caught napping, His Worship Mayor Gifford Marshall of Bartica and his Town Council of Bartica, have heeded that advice.
On the occasion of the Municipalities fourth anniversary as a Town, they launched a Sports Wall of Fame at the Bartica Community Centre which essentially has been set up to educate the population there about their heroes of yore, individuals who have blazed the trail at the national and international levels.
Covid-19 has taken its toll on the world at this time but it has not dampened the push and resolve of Mayor Marshall and his Council to forge ahead with this initiative.
Mayor Marshall informed that the ineffaceable contributions of men and women to sports in Bartica must always be remembered whilst their achievements must never be laid aside, rather, they must be uplifted.
“For generations past and those in future, we must recognise that sports contributes majorly to inspire standards, promote unity and demonstrate talent and skill. No matter the context or particular discipline, our sports personalities have carved a path for
upcoming talent and have given to Barticians, especially the youth, the promise of possibility. By excelling and gaining recognition locally, nationally and internationally, they have shown that it is possible for a Bartician sportsman or woman to achieve great things.”
According to the Municipality, the contributions of the inaugural inductees, ‘reflects greatness’.
They are, 1.Christopher George (Former National Footballer)
2. Ivor Mendonca (Former National & West Indies Cricketer)
3. CalmethYounge (Former National Footballer & Coach)
4. Neil Hernandez (Former National Footballer)
5. Mark Smith (Former National Footballer)
6. Diane Ferreira James (Former National Footballer, Cricketer & FIFA Referee)
7. Basil Singh (Former National Cricket Umpire)
8. Brian Tracey (Former National Footballer)
9. Terrence Archer (Former National Football Captain)
10. Vibert De Fretias (Former National Footballer).
The Wall of Fame, Marshall further noted, “Was created as a permanent reminder of how proud Bartica is of her achievements in Sports and it will see the continued addition of names. The Council through the support of Central Government has made significant investments in the development of municipal playfields, parks and recreational area, and the Bartica Sports Center is one facility that can testify to that.
Over the past years we have created a space that is suitable to foster development of multiple sports disciplines. Our vision isn’t limited, but as the Council looks ahead we envisage a super stadium complete with a synthetic track and seating to encourage township wide participation in events. This vision will undoubtedly come to pass as our township continues to lead the charge in becoming Guyana’s model green town.”
Marshall further posited that as a Town, the efforts of the Council will continue to recognise the contributions of Bartica’s sports personalities.
