DEAR EDITOR,
When will the God-fearing judge, Claudette Singh, bring an end to the elections?
All the attempts to further delay the proper election result is wearing thin. Witness: a law which is there just to protect the secrecy of a voter’s choice is now, by some legal magic, used to prevent the mandatory total transparency of the election.
Also, are we such an uncaring, selfish and immoral bunch with total disregard for our CARICOM friends’ health and welfare? These friends are asked to leave their families and their other responsibilities, exposing themselves to harm for twenty plus days, to help us get to a result which can be had in half a day.
GECOM Chair has the backing of the law to take actions to reduce the risks and get to the election result in a very short time. These three simple steps can be taken. 1 Pair AFC-APNU with PPP/C commissioners to work in teams. They will check on each other. 2 Chair, (with Local observers), oversees the counting and resolves any discrepancies. 3 Live stream count to ALL. No need for overseas observers to be exposed to unnecessary harm; and the actual result will still be arrived at, verified by opposing parties, and witnessed by all stakeholders. Simple.
In this extremely difficult times, if GECOM Chair feels she needs more power to deal with the necessity to protect the people, she can rely on the legal precedent which supports…doing wrong things for good reasons. God will forgive her.
It is ironic, that the institution which is mandated to ensure that every individual’s democratic choice matters, is now hijacked by one single individual to deny that right.
Increasing numbers of PNC loyal supporters (AFC has none) are ashamed and disgusted by the brazen machinations committed in their names by the handful of self-anointed messiahs. These loyal supporters also need to be relieved from having to compromise their integrity.
GECOM chair must use her power and meet her legal duty to the people. The focus should never be on ways to delay the result, but on how to get to it as quickly as possible. No more agony please!
Sincerely,
FaiyaZ Alli
