Event’s end to coincide with Mayor Ubraj Narine’s birthday
The Annual Mayor’s Cup Inter Ward, Village Knockout Football tournament 2020 edition is hopeful for a timely end on restrictions instituted following the global pandemic coronavirus (COVID 19) outbreak affecting the entire world.
Guyana like the rest of the world is on a virtual shutdown where social distancing is a necessity along with proper hygiene to help combat the spread of the deadly virus.
Organiser, Lennox Arthur, the former national player and coach, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the conclusion of the event will coincide with the birth anniversary of Mayor of Georgetown, His Honour Ubraj Narine, who celebrates his birthday on October 12.
Mayor Narine has been doing an excellent job in the restoration of the beauty and upkeep of the Capitol City despite the struggle of limited resources at times and many Guyanese are of the view he is doing a very good job.
Arthur noted that a total 32 teams from the various Wards and Villages are listed to compete once the event is given the all clear like so many other events and programmes around the country and world.
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) as was mandated by governing body FIFA and regional head CONCACAF put a halt to all football activity until it becomes suitable for their resumption. Once activity resumes this tournament is expected to be given the all clear like many others and action will commence.
Arthur is hopeful of a start sometime in August once the all clear is given, and end the tournament prior to Mayor Ubraj Narine’s birthday on October 12. The venues slated to host games are the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Victoria ground, Den Amstel and Mahaicony grounds.
The teams expected to be turning out in the tournament once all goes well are: Representing Georgetown – Bourda Blues, Tucville, Charlestown, North Sophia, South Sophia and Road Warriors.
East Coast – Victoria, Victoria Scorpions, Melanie, Golden Grove, Beterverwagting (BV), Buxton Stars, Mahaica, Plaisance, Ann’s Grove and Lima Dam.
Berbice – Paradise, Mahaicony, Airy Hall, Calcutta and New Amsterdam.
East Bank – Timehri and Kuru Kururu.
West Demerara – Pouderoyen, Stewartville, Den Amstel Kings, Hurry Ate, Uitvlugt, Crane, Wales, Den Amstel and West Side Spartans.
