The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) recently released proposed dates for the 2021 & 2022 calendar which have seen some events being pushed forward due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The General Secretary of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF); Patrick Haynes, who also holds a seat on FIBA’s 3×3 council, released the calendar to Kaieteur Sport and explained that dates are tentative, and it all depends on how well the world deals with this current crisis.
Most notably on the 2021 calendar is the Olympic Games which a scheduled for July 23 – August 8, while the FIBA women’s basketball world cup is scheduled for September 22 – October 1 in 2022. The full calendar can be seen below.
Meanwhile, Haynes added that the men’s Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) championships is still scheduled for later this year with Jamaica having come forward as a potential host for the tournament in which Guyana will be defending their crown. Haynes had explained that the CBC, as per direction by FIBA, has ceased all basketball activities until the end of this month when they will evaluate the level of the pandemic and make a decision henceforth.
However, it will not be surprising if the regional championships are postponed until at least next year with many territories in the regions now beginning to feel the full effects of the covid-19 virus.
