DEAR EDITOR,
In a country where visionary leadership is a devoid skill you don’t expect much from the people who walk the corridors of power. But even in some private sector organisations you see this disdain in which they treat the people in this time of crisis – the global pandemic COVID-19 creating havoc worldwide.
When faced with uncertainty, people look to leadership for information, reassurance, and guidance. It is sad to see large private sector organisations (in Guyana context) exposing the people for profits. I am in no way calling for a complete shut down, but at least explore the possibility of the non-essential people operating from home or put in place some rotation or shift policy. Minimise the risk of having everyone in the plants and offices at the same time. That is surely not the case in some of the ‘glorified’ big companies in Guyana.
At bare minimum installing wash stations is not enough to combat the spread of this virus. Most scientists and specialists keep emphasizing the need for social distancing and staying indoors to avoid the spread. I know personally of recognised business heads in Guyana from the time they heard the airports shutting down all arrangements were made for them to get out of the country. The other seniors on the ground are making all arrangements to protect themselves and rightly so. Do only their lives matter? What about those employees who have to face their colleagues, traverse populated areas for transportation and go home and face the families?
This crisis has shown us: money, power and status do not matter. We are all in this together trying to save the human race. I urge you to rethink your strategies and stop putting profits before people. You and your companies featuring on frontage of dailies could all vanish if we don’t save our people.
Yours truly,
R. Saghar
