Member of the governing coalition, the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) has joined the calls for a national recount of ballots from the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections. Furthermore, the WPA wants a national unity government, with a mandate for constitutional reform ending the “winner takes all” governance system.
In a statement to the press yesterday, the WPA reiterated the demand for a verified recount of all electoral districts as legally permitted under the Constitution. “We call on all political parties to accept the results of a recount and will call on them to do so if necessary,” the WPA appealed.
Furthermore, following the examination of the ballot boxes which would reveal the credibility of the elections, the WPA said that it wants whichever party wins to form a government of national unity for an agreed period with a clear mandate to complete constitutional reform and ending the “winner- takes- all” governance system.
According to the WPA, the ridding of such a system is the “only” way out of the “historical entrapment”, which hinders economic and social progress as well as racial unity. Local activists and international observer such as the Carter Centre all share the same sentiments as the WPA.
In addition, the WPA said that it rejects violence in all its forms and especially as occurred since Elections Day directed at children, women and law enforcement personnel.
