Mar 22, 2020 Letters
Dear Editor,
This is my second letter to the newspapers in all of my more than threescore years. I wish to refer to my first letter, which was published in July 2019. The subject of that letter was “A call for a government of national unity”
Please allow me to be reiterative. All of us must put our shoulders to the wheel to make our Motto a reality. My hypothesis in July 2019 is unchanged. It is that a vast majority of Guyanese would support the working together of the PPP and the APNU/AFC, in the formation of a national patriotic government, for an agreed period. We are in troubled times, and the call is for President Granger and leaders of the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change [APNU/AFC], and Opposition Leader Mr. Jagdeo and leaders of the People’s Progressive Party[PPP] to put Guyana ahead of party politics.
The motivation for my first letter was a letter to the papers also in July 2019 by an outstanding son of the soil, Mr. Rashleigh Jackson. He lamented that, “a truce-a pause- may be helpful if it were to be used in our domestic politics in attenuating abrasiveness which we have endured for a prolonged period.” In the same letter, Mr. Jackson worried that “the boat may already have sprung its moorings and is heading inevitably to the rapids.” I replied to Mr. Jackson that “we will not go down. The young people of this land will save us.” I sincerely apologise to him for not grasping the gravity of his message back in July 2019. I am now in total agreement. “We need a truce-a pause.” Whatever comes out from the courts and recounting of votes would not solve our ingrained and destructive political problems.
I think it was Mr. Eusi Kwayana, who sometime ago said, “there was no innocent party”. The Holy Bible states in Romans 3:23 that “all have sinned.” Most commentators are focusing on problems relating to the elections of March 2. It is expected, but we need to look much further ahead. This is a call to the leaders of both groups, let us show our youths that we care about their future. They are very concerned at this time. They need to see a paradigm shift immediately. This is an appeal to President Granger and Opposition Leader Mr. Jagdeo to publicly announce an agreement in principle to form a government of national unity. One or both need to rise to the occasion and put Guyana first, we do not need outsiders to map this out for us. We have talented, patriotic Guyanese who can put together a framework to take us out of this quagmire.
Some names that come to mind are Sir ShridathRamphal, Rashleigh Jackson, Yesu Persaud, Ralph Ramkarran, Harold Lutchman, Desiree Bernard, Carl Singh, Moses Bhagwan, Eusi Kwayana, Clarissa Riehl and many others. Some influential Guyanese need to take the initiative to invite those who see the urgency and have the capacity to contribute to what is absolutely necessary now – an agreement to work together for the benefit of Guyana by the APNU/AFC and the PPP. None of the two groups has the human resources to successfully move this country forward. Together they would have a wider and more diverse group to manage our affairs.
Mr. Editor, I note a similar call by Mr. EusiKwayana and Mr. Moses Bhagwan for unity to save our country. We need to get past our immediate conundrum, but more importantly, we need a lasting solution. So please, President Granger and Mr. Jagdeo, make a move that would change the direction of our beloved Guyana.
