Former Executive member of the Guyana National Rifle Association (GuyanaNRA) and a former Smallbore Section Vice Captain, Claude ‘Alfy’ Duguid passed away on Tuesday last following a period of illness.
The loss of Duguid, who also represented the West Indies Fullbore Shooting Council (WIFBSC), has plunged the local and Caribbean shooting fraternity into a state of shock.
While President of the GuyanaNRA Brigadier Patrick West has expressed sincere condolences to the family relatives and friends of the late Claude Duguid, Secretary, Ryan Sampson who also holds a similar position with the WIFBSC remembers his former colleague as an accountable and meticulous person.
“Claude could be described as cool, calm and collective, a humble and reliable person. He was always calm and with a smile on his face. When he was having difficulty with the conditions on the range, he would stand or sit silently, working the equations in his head in preparation for the next range, with the intent of beating the odds second time around.”
Duguid fell ill some time ago and this would have restricted him from being active: “Being the shrewd thinker and problem solver Duguid was and after his illness restricted his movement, he most certainly would have been thinking, well how can I overcome this illness, how can I walk again, and be independent.
He could no longer be seen around town, he could no longer assist any of his teammates with electrical issues at their home, he could no longer be on the range each Sunday, enjoying a sport he so loved. I can also recall, in the midst of him shooting on Sunday’s, you would suddenly hear him say, Corey, did you eat…did you do your homework. That’s the Claude we knew.”
Claude Duguid fired off his GuyanaNRA career around 1990 and over the years, he became a permanent member of the National Fullbore Team, representing Guyana regionally and internationally.
In 2000 he was part of the West Indies Fullbore Team that participated in the Millennium Match at Bisley, England, where he performed admirably, Sampson reflected. On the regional front, Duguid always looked forward to battling with his West Indian friends on the range and to have a good laugh after, about the challenging or tricky conditions that they all would have experienced during the shoots. His last international engagement was in 2012.
Sampson further reminisced: “Claude’s leadership qualities were utilised when he was appointed Vice Captain in the Association’s Smallbore (Handgun) Section. He was also an elected Executive Council member of the Association for a number of years. In both capacities he distinguished himself. He was instrumental in recruiting many members for the Association and guided them in learning the sport.
His capacity for accountability and his meticulousness led him to being responsible for our ammunition and would balance each week both live rounds and used shells. On tours, he took care of checking all rifles with the relevant authorities upon arrival. This was his forte, accountability.”
Duguid’s longtime friend and Fullbore Team Captain Mahendra Persaud said he was shocked to have learnt of his friends passing. Meanwhile, the shooting family from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica and Bermuda were all shocked at learning of Duguid’s passing earlier this week.
WIFBSC President, Major John Nelson conveyed sympathy on behalf of the Caribbean fraternity. The funeral of the late Claude ‘Alfy’ Duguid will take place on Tuesday.
