In sunny conditions at Bourda, Demerara beat Essequibo by 34 runs to dethrone Berbice in the final round of the Bel Air Rubis Service Station’s U-17 Inter-County 50-over cricket tournament yesterday, while Berbice finished second by defeating the National U-15s by eight wickets at Everest.
Man-of-the-Match West Indies U-16 batsman Mavindra Dindyal followed up scores of 12 and 50 not out with 40 from 45 balls with four fours and a six, but opener Ajay Gainda who was run for 20 was the only other batsman to reach 20 as Demerara were bowled out for 168 in 41.1 overs.
Jaden Campbell (18) and Anthony Khan, Nicholas Rajpat and Rudranauth Kissoon with 15 each and Zachary Jodah with 12 were the other batsmen to reach double figures, while extras contributed 25 to a disappointing total.
Skipper Aryan Persaud had 3-27 and Ryan Atkinson 3-33 were the leading wicket takers for Essequibo who were dismissed for 134 in 45.1 overs despite a cameo 30-ball 34 with four sixes from the big hitting Renaldo Scouten.
Nicko Vincent (18), Quintin Sampson (16), Jarred Allicock (12) and Abdul Nadir (10) were the only others to reach double fig
ures as Essequibo who were bundled out for 134 in 45.1 overs.
Off-spinner Kissoon picked up 4-25 and got support from Alvin Mohabir who followed-up his five wicket haul in the last round with 2-19.
Earlier, Demerara won the toss, and on a slow track and fairly fast outfield, a small gathering saw Gainda and Khan put together 30 for the first wicket before Khan was bowled by Romel Hubbard.
Campbell, one of seven batsmen to score fifties in this tournament, joined Gainda and the pair saw the 50 posted before Hubert struck again when he had Campbell caught and bowled at 51-2.
The elegant Dindyal joined Gainda, who was looking set for a big score before he was run out at 92-3 but Dindyal continued to bat fluently.
But with the score on 120 and Dindyal 10 short of consecutive fifties, the right hander looked to work Atkinson off his legs and was caught and bowled.
Nicholas Rajpat was removed by Aryan Persaud at 134-5 before Jodah fell to Atkinson at 142-6.
But three wickets tumbled for five runs before Jadesh Datterdeen was LBW to give Persaud his third victim to end the innings.
When Essequibo began their reply they quickly lost Hubbard (1) off Thaddeus Lovell at 10-1 and never recovered despite the big hitting of the left-handed Scouten who hit one of his sixes on the roof of the Rohan Kanhai stand.
Persaud showed good technique but took 46 balls for his seven before he was run out at 54-4 just when his stand with Scouten was looking threatening.
Scouten was bowled by Mohabir and although Vincent and Sampson offered fight Kissoon and Mohabir wrapped up the game.
At Everest, the U-15s were bowled out for 97 as Nicholas Sheopersaud top scored with 27.
Leon Cecil took 6-14, only the second five-wicket in the tournament, while Johnathon Rampersaud supported with 3-23 for Berbice who raced to 98-2 in 21.4 overs.
Mahendra Gopilall hit eight boundaries in his 53-ball 54, while Hemindra Gordyal faced 54 balls in his unbeaten 30 and reached the ropes four times.
At the presentation, Bel Air Rubis Service Station’s representative Rohan Mangru said Bel Air Rubis was pleased to be associated with the GCB and mentioned that the sponsors would seriously look at the possibilities’ of sponsoring next year’s tournament.
