DEAR EDITOR,
It is obvious that GECOM has been ill-prepared to accommodate voters to express their franchise in a free and fair manner, and one which is free from fear.
By drastically reducing the number of polling stations and making it extremely difficult for voters in the opposition PPP strongholds, it appears as if the government is using this tactic to increase their chances of getting the majority votes in the country.
Imagine – they are using the Lusignan prison as a polling station! This site is in a relatively distant isolated area – approximately two miles from the regular village dwellings. And, can you imagine voters wanting to go to a prison site to cast their votes? Many villagers, especially women, would not dream to undertake such a journey.
This use of tents, refusal to use private dwellings (including churches, mandirs and mosques) in PPP areas, and the converging of polling stations in special areas in targeted villages (such as Mon Repos and Annandale) are enough reasons to postpone the elections for another month.
Elections were due in the early part of 2019, but Mr. Granger and supporters looked for every reason under the sun to delay the elections; voters could, therefore, wait another month to ensure a fairer playing field.
At this juncture, the opposition has little option but to request a postponement of the election until voters have an equal chance to vote with ease, and free from fear.
Yours truly,
Dr. Devanand Bhagwan
