The cycling fraternity was plunged into mourning yesterday when cyclist Jude Bentley was killed on the spot in an early morning accident during one of his training sessions on the Rupert Craig Highway.
Information reaching Kaieteursport stated that Bentley came into contact with a black land cruiser, allegedly driven by retired Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force Gary Best.
The unfortunate and tragic incident took place at around 05:00hrs; both men were heading east along the highway. A shocked and sorrowful Best told the media that he did not see the cyclist on the road and that he regretted the accident.
Racing Secretary of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Malcolm Sonaram told Kaieteur Sport that this is a big loss for the cycling fraternity. “Safety for the cyclists is a major concern for us; I hate the fact that we have to wait for something of this nature to happen before this issue can be addressed. We have been asking for a training facility for the cyclists for some time now and I hope that something can be done so that the cyclists can train in a safer environment.”
Sonoram said that cyclists should be respected on the road way. “If people use the road with care, these things can be avoided.”
Bentley represented Guyana at the 2006 Sydney Commonwealth Games in Australia.
He was also a businessman; he owned and operated the Bike Shop on Robb Street.
