Reyad Karim and Kumar Deopersaud lead Albion to Championship honours
Albion shrugged off their disappointment of losing the Busta Champions of Champions 40 overs and Ivan Madray 20/20 finals over the last two weeks to defeat arch-rivals Rose Hall Town by 42 runs and in the process lift the 2019/BCB Ramnaresh Sarwan Under-17 Cricket Tournament title.
Playing at the Area H Ground infront of a sizeable Thursday crowd, Albion were spearheaded by Reyad Karim’s even 50 and a fine spell of left arm spin from the talented Kumar Deopersaud, who claimed 4 for 16 from seven overs.
Play was delayed by half hour due to early morning rain but Albion still decided to bat first in the pressure atmosphere of a finals. Openers Hemendra Gurdyal and Naresh Veersammy added 31 for the first wicket before the former was brilliantly caught by Ricardo Ramdehol at first slip off Jonathan Rampersaud for 16. Veersammy was then bowled by Rampersaud for 12 at 41 for 2 in the 31st overs, but Berbice Under-17 pair of Sarwan Chaitnarine and Karim added 42 for the 3rd wicket before Guyana Under-15 off spinner Matthew Pottaya bowled Sarwan for 33.
Karim and national junior cricketer Tameshwar Mohabir then featured in a 34 runs 4th wicket stand with Mohabir hitting 22 Karim, who was dropped five times, top scored with 50 as Albion reached 198 for 8 off their allotted 50 overs. Rampersaud ended with two for 49, Pottaya 2 for 31 from 10 overs, while Ricardo Ramdehol who h
ad been wicketless, conceded just 21 runs from ten impressive overs.
Needing to score 199 from 50 overs to retain their 2018 championship title, Rose Hall Town Under-17 team, suffered an early blow when Seiraj Chatterpaul was bowled by Leon Cecil for nought at 7 for 1 in the second over. Ricardo Ramdehol and Jeremy Sandia then added 37 for the second wicket before Ramdehol threw away his wicket for 29, caught off Gourav Ramesh. Mahendra Gopilall and Vikash Subramanir both fell without scoring as the home team felled to 45 for 4. Skipper Jonathan Rampersaud, nursing an injured wrist and Sandia added 65 for the 5th wicket to restore some hope, but Deopersaud stuck in his second over to have Rampersaud caught at mid-wicket for 40. Sandia then ran himself for 39 and despite 19 from Jai Tike, Rose Hall Town were bowled out for 156 in 46.5 overs. Deopersaud, who is fourteen years, claimed 4 for 16, Ramesh 2 for 7 and Cecil 2 for 23.
BCB President Hilbert Foster, who was accompanied at the presentation ceremony by several board members including Chairman of the Competition Committee Leslie Solomon and his deputy Neil Rudder, hailed the tournament as a success. Foster expressed gratitude to Ramnaresh Sarwan, the former West Indies Captain for his support of Berbice Cricket and hailed him as a true friend of the Ancient County.
The BCB hailed the friendly atmosphere that the final was played in, despite the rivalry between the two clubs. He also disclosed that the 2020 edition would start shortly for players born on or after the 1st of September 2003. Foster urged the players from both teams to become role models for their peers and to judge others by their characters and not the colour of their skins, the colour or their or the texture of their hair.
Albion received the winning Sarwan trophy and $60,000 while the runner up carried home $30,000 and a trophy. Karim was named Man of the Finals by Selector Leslie Solomon and received a cash prize and trophy.
