Rose Hall Town Bakewell defeat Albion by 36 runs to clinch title
Rose Hall Town Bakewell overcame their nine-wicket defeat by Albion in the Raffik Construction 100 balls tournament to turn the table and lift the BCB/ Let’s Bet Sports 100 balls Lower Corentyne cricket final. They defeated their arch- rivals Albion by 36 runs at the Albion Ground to clinch their club’s fifth Berbice title this year.
Playing at the historic venue, Rose Hall Town, batting first, were given a flying start by openers Kevin Sinclair and Junior Sinclair. The opening pair added 83 in nine overs as they took the attack to the Albion all spin attack. Junior Sinclair was the first to be dismissed when he was caught off the bowling of Sharaz Ramcharran for 29 from 25 balls, which included two boundaries. Keith Simpson was then caught off Joshua Harrichand for 04 at 92 for 2, Former national junior batsman Brandon Prashad made 12, Ravi Narine 08, Sylus Tyndall 04 and Surendra Kissoonlall 01 as the visitors ended their innings on 145 for 6 of their allotted 100 balls.
Kevin Sinclair carried his bat for a well-played and matured 82 not out. Sinclair innings included 7 boundaries, a six and came off 47 balls. Bowling for Albion, Ramcharran took a wicket apiece for 24 and 19 respectively.
Needing to score 146 from 100 balls to become the Lower Corentyne Let’s Bet Sports 100 balls title, openers Ritesh Umroa and Adrian Sukhwa added 25 in four overs before Kevin Sinclair, who would be debarred at the end of the 2019 tournament, rocked back the stumps of Umroa for 16. The inform Sharaz Ramcharran joined Sukhwa at the crease but was then beaten four balls in a row by the pacy Sylus Tyndall before he was caught by Ravi Narine off Tyndall for 04 at 30 for 2 in the fifth over. Ramesh Kasinauth was dismissed at 47 for 3 in the 9th over but Manoj Poornauth and the ultra-aggressive Sukhwa brought Albion in the game by adding 45 for the fourth wicket before the former was run out for 15. Kevin Umroa was then run out for nought as Albion’s chase faltered.
The big blow for the Albion team came when Sukhwa was caught off left arm spinner Ravi Narine for 46 off 32 balls. Sukhwa struck two fours and two huge sixes. Narine ended with 2 for 12, while Tyndall, Kevin Sinclair and Junior Sinclair took one wicket a piece for 12, 18 and 29 respectively. Kevin Sinclair was named Man of the Final.
Chairman of the BCB Competition Committee Leslie Solomon hailed the tournament as a massive success and noted that it was the completion of the four sub-zone tournaments. D’ Edwards won the West Berbice Zone, Rose Hall Canje emerged winner of New Amsterdam/ Canje, Rose Hall Town Bakewell won the Lower Corentyne Zone, while Dukestown took home the Upper Corentyne title. The four champions would now play each other in the overall Berbice championship on a date to be announced.
BCB/ Secretary Angela Haniff expressed gratitude to the Guyana Lottery Company for their support of Berbice Cricket. Mr. Ian De Barros of Let’s Bet Sports stated that his company was pleased to be associated with Berbice Cricket and indicated that the success of the 2019 tournament would result in a renewal in 2020. Both the winner and runner up team received financial prizes and trophies.
