The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will run off the first of three CARIFTA Games trials tomorrow at the National Track & Field Center (NTFC) on the West Coast of Demerara as the local athletes look to make the qualifying mark for the 49th edition of the competition that will be hosted in Bermuda this Easter weekend.
For the past few years, Guyana have been turning in decent performances at the regional track and field meet that sees 26 nations participating and it is anticipated that the upward curve of Guyana’s competitiveness can continue this year.
Guyana will be without the likes of regular medalists the likes of Joanna Archer, Claudrice McKoy and Chantoba Bright, who would have all contributed significantly throughout the years, but the Track team’s senior coach believes that the current crop of under-20 athletes Guyana has, will make us proud.
Tomorrow’s meet will get underway from 10:30hrs and will also serve as the fourth development meet of the AAG for this year. However, this meet will not feature odd-distances races namely the 60m, 150m, 300m, 600m etch but it will b
e contested using the traditional distanced events.
Apart from the youngsters who are hungry for success, there will be action amongst the open athletes. Fans are eager to see the battle between sprint duo Davin Fraser and Akeem Stewart continue. They thrilled fans during the previous development meets at Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) and Enmore Community Center respectively and the rivalry is set to continue on the West Side tomorrow.
At the ECC last week, Fraser of the Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) and National Javelin record holder, Leslain Baird of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) club turned in the most notable performances.
In the men’s open 60m dash, Fraser clocked a blazing 6.90s in a big win over the field. His club mate Stephon Boodie was second in 7.04s while Yannick Williams of GDF was third in 7.11s.
In the open men’s Javelin event, Baird, who missed the business end of last season after suffering from internal hemorrhoids, continued his positive rehabilitation with an impressive performance. Baird registered a distance of 64.90m, spearing into the heavy Atlantic Ocean breeze while using a short run-up.
The Tokyo Olympics hopeful will be in action tomorrow as well as he aims to get into competition shape with the Olympic Standard of 85m his target. (Calvin Chapman)
