Former champion Nigel Bryan will be looking to regain national honours when the Senior National Table Tennis Championships gets underway this weekend at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue.
The event, hosted by the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) is the premier domestic tournament and serves as a key component for establishing rankings and selection systems.
Bryan, who was the first junior athlete to win both the Junior and Senior championships in 2011, has made a battle cry sending out a stern warning to the opposition as he aims to get his hands on the championship trophy once more.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Bryan said that he has been training hard in preparation for this tournament while, “I have been putting special emphasis on keeping mentally strong because you can have all the skill in the world and not deliver if you are mentally weak.”
The 27-year-old shared that while he has much respect for the talented players he will have to face this weekend, he is prepared to go all out for victory. Nigel will come up against the likes of current National Champion and 2018 Caribbean Men’s Singles bronze medalist Christopher Franklin along with 2019 Caribbean Under-21 silver medalist Shemar Britton, Joel Alleyne, Elishaba Johnson, Miguel Wong, veteran Colin France, Orin Hickerson, Jonathan Sankar and Edinho Lewis, young and seasoned campaigners all staking their claim to the throne.
On the distaff side, current Women’s champion Natalie Cummings in the absence of Chelsea Edghill and Trenace Lowe will face stern challenges from Jody-Ann Blake, Priscilla Greaves, Neveah Clarkston, Thuraia Thomas, Nhecki McCrae, Crystal Melville, Abigail Martin and Jasmine Billingy, among others.
