U.S. based sprint ace Jasmine Abrams is proving that the athletic blood runs rich in the family after she shattered Guyana’s national 60m Indoor
record last weekend with a Personal Best (PB) time of 7.32 seconds at the Bob Pollock Invitational at Clemson’s Indoor Track in South Carolina.
The previous record of 7.41s was held by Brenessa Thompson who had set that time back in 2016 at the Reveille Invitational in Texas. Abrams was two thousandths of a second away from qualifying for the 2020 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, which has now been postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak and sprinter posited that she was positive that she would have been able to make the 7.30s 60m women’s qualifying mark.
Jasmine’s sister; Aaliyah, has qualified for the Tokyo Games in the 400m and the 25-year-old is optimistic about her chances of joining the younger sibling on the biggest stage for Track and Field this July-August in the 100m event.
Her PB in the 100m is 11.48s that was recorded during her final Meet last year but with her current form that will be complimented with some extra work from her father/coach Denzel, the rising star maintains that the 11.15s qualifying time is within her reach.
“Realistically speaking, I honestly do (think I can make the time). As long as I stay healthy, continue to train at the level that will propel me to such heights, and remain positive, I will make standard”, Jasmine declared.
Currently, Jasmine is looking to land a pro contract with one of the major Track and Field apparel brands (Nike, Adidas or Puma) to help with her further development in the sport. (Calvin Chapman)
