DEAR EDITOR,
In the media, there has been an expression of interest by some officials in exploring and pursuing the reestablishment of a national airline. As attractive as such a goal may appear to be, we must keep in mind that the country has higher priorities to pursue that will generate a better return on investment while creating a higher number of jobs. In addition, the airline industry can be a money pit where it is very difficult to make a profit as seen when one takes the time to review existing and past players within the airline industry. An alternative approach would be to co-brand with an existing and reliable provider of airline services to the region. This will de-risk the country’s exposure and eliminate the need to take the assets onto our books while meeting the goals of establishing the presence of a national carrier. A very good deal could be negotiated if the benefits are clearly understood.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
