Defending champion High Rollers, as well as giants Silver Bullets, Swag Entertainment and Presidential stormed their way into the quarterfinal section when the 2020 season of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Championship kicked off on Friday with the Linden zonal competition at the Silver City Tarmac.
The youthful High Rollers unit defeated NK Ballers 1-0. On the other hand, Silver Bullets riddled Haynes Hitters by a 4-2 scoreline. Presidential mirrored the aforesaid scoreline, downing Elite Ballers 4-2. Similarly, Swag Entertainment sent a stern warning to the field, brushing aside Barsenal 5-1.
Meanwhile in other results, Retrieve Unknowns defeated Quiet Storm 1-0 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 0-0. Similarly, Amelia’s Ward Russians edged Capital Storm 3-2 on sudden death penalty kicks following a scoreless regulation time interval.
Also, Amazings, last year’s losing finalist, defeated Dave & Celina’s via the walkover route. According to the event coordinator Rawle Gittens, “The opening night illustrated the enthusiasm and excitement surrounding the tournament as the fans who descended on the venue in the traditional large numbers, was treated to quality and exciting action which is certainly only going to improve as the tournament
progresses.”
Gittens further said, “With the tournament only being four days in duration, everyone was required to compete on the opening night, as the tournament is being contested utilizing an elimination format. The eventual winners will progress to the quarterfinal section, with the losers advancing to the Plate Exhibition Round. The winning teams from the quarterfinals will then advance to the semi-finals, while the four losing quarterfinalists will also enter the Plate round. The Plate Round will conclude on the final night of the event and will be held before the third place playoff.”
Up to press time, the quarterfinal round of matches was underway. The other playing nights for the tournament are February 7th [semi-final round] and February 8th [Final]. The Berbice Zonal tournament is slated to commence upon the conclusion of the Linden tournament.
Winner of the event will collect $400,000 and the championship trophy. On the other hand, the runner-up will pocket $150,000 and the respective accolade. Similarly, the third and fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and $75,000 respectively and a trophy.
