THERE IS NO SHORTAGE of surgical gloves at the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC), Upper Demerara/Berbice (Region Ten) acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Michelle Bollers, confirmed Thursday.
Bollers was responding to a post by a popular social media activist claiming a shortage of surgical gloves at LHC forcing the authorities to resort to use of the vinyl type, unsuited for the specialised functions.
“We recognise it was vinyl and not the regular surgical disposable gloves and a decision was taken to use them for non-sterile activities,” Bollers explained.
She said the donation of the vinyl items were made by overseas-based former members of the bauxite mining town of Linden who willingly keep contributing to the development of the health sector there.
“The donation was never meant to be used for patient care and other surgical activities. This decision was communicated to supervisors uplifting the items from the Materials Management Unit (MMU) at Diamond, on the East Bank Demerara corridor,” Bollers explained.
The acting CEO said distribution of the gift to LHC employees was not a compromised move “Since they would have already had gloves for patient care”.
In the social media post, the well-known activist made a public appeal for surgical gloves citing posts allegedly from LHC employees claiming to be fed-up with the situation.
The gift of vinyl gloves was uplifted a little over a week ago from the MMU Diamond bond and Bollers also confirmed that LHC received more gloves from the MMU this week.
LHC administrators have removed the vinyl gloves from use in the wards and will “find other uses” for the donations, CEO Bollers said.
