In a truncated match on Friday night at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Ground at UWI SPEC, Malteenoes All Stars beat home team Preysal by 89 runs on DLS system in the UWI-Unicom T20 tournament in Trinidad to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Kellon Carmichael is presented with Man-of-the-Match by a rep of Bhagwansings Hardware after taking 4-4 on Friday in T&T.
Chasing a revised target of 135 in 17 overs due to a stoppage at the break as a result of rain, the star studded Preysal crumbled for 45 in nine overs despite 22 from Kamil Pooran and 10 from West Indies T20 Wicket-Keeper Denish Ramdin.
Man-of-the-Match Kellon Carmichael had 4-4 with his medium pace, Skipper Steven Jacobs followed up his 5-27 on Friday morning with 3-7 and left-arm spinner Raj Nanan had 2-14 for Malteenoes All Stars who were bowled out for 151 in 18.1 overs after being invited to bat.
Nanan top-scored with 25 from 13 balls which included three fours and six, Quinton Sampson hit three sixes in 21 from eight balls, Trevon Griffith hit two fours and a six in 19 and Nkosie Barker made 17 but nobody else reached 15.
Bowling for Preysal, who also reached the Quarterfinals by virtue of ending second to the Guyanese in their group, Stephon Ramdial and Varoon Samaroo took three wickets each.
A small gathering of about 35 fans watched in cold and windy conditions as Preysal opted to field first under lights.
Opener Griffith, fresh from a half-century in the first game against Tobago Marlins, hit a six and two fours but could not go on, while Guyana Jaguars’ Super50 right-hander Johnathon Foo,who made 41 in the first match and shared in a fifty stand with Griffith, fell for 10.
But Nanan, Sampson, Griffith and Barker all got starts to rally the Guyanese to what proved to be a winning score in the end.
When Preysal began their reply they lost a clutter of wickets and never recovered. The vastly experienced Ramdin was trapped LBW for 10 by Carmichael who ripped through the innings, while off-spinner Jacobs and Nanan chipped in to give their team an emphatic win.
Both teams, Preysal and Malteenoes All-Stars will play their Quarterfinals on Tuesday with the Guyanese playing the night game.
The winner and runners-up in the group of Power Gen, Clarke Road and the Trinidad & Tobago Defense Force will oppose Malteenoes and Preysal respectively on Tuesday.
The final is set for January 19 and the first prize isTT$40,000 and a trophy, while the runners-up collectsTT$15,000 and a trophy. (Sean Devers)
