The third annual Turbo Energy Drink knockout football tournament continued on Friday evening under lights at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue with a double header featuring two quarterfinal matches, which saw Fruta Conquerors under-20 and Pouderoyen booking their places in the semifinals.
Tournament and fan favourites, Fruta Conquerors youth edged Buxton Stars 3-2 in the feature match on Friday. Skipper Nicholas McArthur, Ryan ‘Bam Bam’ Hackett and Osafo Simpson each netted one goal in the win for the city side, while the East Coast men goals came courtesy of an own goal from Omar Yhap and another solitary strike off the boot of Shemar Scott.
The opening game saw West Demerara’s Pouderoyen getting past Buxton under-20 6-5 via kicks from the penalty mark route after full-time finished goalless, while extra time saw Darrel Abrams firing the West Side ahead in the 98th minute before Troni Semple sent the game to penalties with his equaliser in the 106th.
The final two quarterfinal matches will be played this evening at the same venue beginning at 19:00hrs featuring Riddim Squad against defending champions Northern Rangers in the first match, while Santos under-20 will play Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in the feature match that blows off at 21:00hrs.
The third annual Turbo Football tournament, which is promoted by Petra Organisation, commenced last November with ten teams but inclement weather forced it to be completed this year.
The champions of this tournament will pocket $400,000 with second place bagging $200,000, third place $100,000 and fourth place $50,000.
