2020 Reebok CrossFit Games
By Franklin Wilson
The male and female Guyanese duo of reigning Kares Caribbean Fitness Challenge champion Dillon ‘The Beast’ Mahadeo and Delice Adonis have qualified for the second successive year to represent the ‘Golden Arrowhead ’at the Reebok CrossFit Games, the world’s premier test to find the Fittest on Earth.
This year’s Games will once again be held in Madison, Wisconsin, USA from July 29 to August 2 next. Manager/Coach of the duo, Jaime McDonald broke the news stating that he was ecstatic that the pair once again braved tremendous challenges to qualify.
Mahadeo and Adonis who are both fine tuning preparations ahead of their participation at the 6th annual Kares Caribbean Fitness Challenge, under the theme: ‘Bring Out The Beast In You’ at the National Park Tarmac on Sunday February 9th, went through a vigorous five-week qualification process.
This began in October of last year and entailed the athletes having to submit specific workouts (one each for five weeks) to the Reebok CrossFit online for which they were judged and subsequently given the thumbs up with regards to qualifying.
Coach McDonald said he is really glad that his charges have, for the second year in a row made it to the pinnacle of the sport to showcase their skills and keep the Golden Arrowhead flying high.
“It’s really satisfying to see this achievement for both of them because over the last few years, I’ve watched them grow as athletes, constantly putting in great
efforts to master the various disciplines that needs to be mastered in order to be an effective and successful crossfit athlete.
These guys have to learn and excel at so many different things; gymnastics, weightlifting, athletics training, calisthenics training, there’s so much going on and there’s so many that they have to put into it, so I’m really happy to see their efforts bearing fruits.”
Mahadeo was the top Caribbean athlete on debut at last year’s event held July 29 – August 3. He ended 95th out of 148 athletes, while Adonis ended 117th of 134 females, both exiting after the first round at the grueling event.
So intense was the competition that only 20 females made it past the first round. Ever since, having already experiencing firsthand what it takes to get there and be competitive, the duo have been hard at training under the watchful eyes and guidance of McDonald which has resulted in the first hurdle being crossed, and that is qualifying.
“What’s going to be interesting to see is their growth over the last year going into the competition and where they will place this time around relative to where they placed last year. Adonis would be trying to break into the top 100 of about 150 athletes, while Mahadeo will try to improve his placement. I am also hoping he can get further along into the competition and get through several elimination rounds as opposed to last year.”
Competition would again be fierce as the best from around the world would all be trying to out-duel each other including those in the Elite bracket.
Coach Mc Donald also pointed out that corporate support would be vital to ensure that the athletes are able to focus on being in pristine shape. He expressed gratitude to DeSinco Trading, MVP Sports, Fitness Express and Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire Insurance Company Ltd for partnering with the team for last year’s Reebok CrossFit Games.
“Those companies really came through for last year and hopefully we’ll get the interest of other corporate sponsors, interested persons or organisations who would like to make their endeavor a lot easier and allow them to be more successful.
