The Mabaruma solar farm which was constructed by Meeco Group of Germany for $264M was completed in November 2018. However due to various issues it has not been able to provide the services for which it was constructed.
The Minister of Public Infrastructure, Mr. David Patterson, had stated that the reason for his Ministry’s failure to commission the service was the incorrect installation of the batteries and inverters.
Hence the ministry is working on having new ones installed correctly and should be completed in February.
He further stated that the new batteries and inverters have been put out to tender. The poor maintenance of the panel which had previously raised concerns after it was taken over by unwanted vegetation was taken care of when arrangements were put into focus for regular visits made to the solar plant.
The Minister said the life span of the solar plant is 25 years, having the capacity to power at least three quarters of the community while the others will have electricity generated from other sources such as fossil fuel and diesel.
The system is a hybrid system which will power the entire community throughout the day when the sun is at its highest. You may be having a 100 percent solar, even if the rain falls. It is likely to drop to 80 percent depending on the conditions. In instances when there is overcast for more than half an hour the generator will automatically switch on.
In previous interviews the Public Infrastructure Minister, had made references to the incorrectly positioned half-hour storage batteries.
The solar farm produces 400 kilowatts. Before the battery dies the system automatically switches to the generator but that has not been synchronized.
“This initiative was done as part of the government’s plan to move Guyana towards becoming a Green State that will serve as a medium to reduce the country’s fossil fuel bill and prevent carbon emissions in the atmosphere,” Ministry.
