The male and female surgical wards of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) have been boosted with 40 beds and mattresses along with detergents, courtesy of an overseas donor.
This is according to a top official working at the hospital.
The official stated that the equipment and detergents were handed over to the hospital last Wednesday. The donation has been recognized as a great gesture by medical personnel working at the department, especially patients admitted at the facility.
The official further stated that although the donations are at a time when there is no shortage, it is still appreciated because such equipment are at all times needed in the wards.
“Over 300 patients are presently admitted in the male and female surgical wards. Beds, mattresses and detergents are some things that are at all times needed in these departments. We have to ensure that the place is kept clean and germs free.
“There are cases where patients came to this hospital with one problem and stayed some other days because they would have contracted some other infection.”
According to the official the city hospital is mandated to offer fair and free services and by doing that hundreds of important materials and equipment are used up daily; and if someone or an organization wants to donate various items to the hospital the donation will be highly appreciated.
There were some negative comments last December, from an official working in the wards, about the way patients were being treated in the hospital and the unclean conditions of the wards, specifically the male and surgical departments that patients are admitted into.
Yesterday, the patients did not hesitate to express their satisfaction with the standard of cleanliness at the city hospital.
When asked Jairam Paul, who has been in the male surgical for the past two months due to some complications, stated that since December 18, 2019 he has seen a lot of improvements in the sanitary situation at the hospital.
“First when I got admitted here I was placed on another bed next to a man that has a big hole on his foot, and it used to smell terrible.
“When we would go outside and ask the nurses for some kind of detergents to clean the place, the nurses would tell we straight that they ain’t got no sweet smell to spray the place and why we family don’t bring for us. But now the place does smell and look good.”
Patients admitted in the female surgical wards all shared the same opinion about the satisfactory clean condition of the wards at the city hospital.
