According to the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, a new Service Division has been established with the aim of monitoring various civil works projects.
Speaking at the Ministry’s New Year press conference, the Minister highlighted that the Division was formed last year and thus far has facilitated the employment of over 60 individuals.
The Service Division is expected to play a pivotal role in the execution of various civil works projects in Guyana.
Patterson said that the unit currently has a dual function, which is, reviewing all designs for infrastructural works for various government ministries and monitoring the execution of all projects, such as construction. The minister said that work within the unit has already begun.
The Minister made reference to the leaked Auditor General report for 2018, particularly commenting on the state auditor’s findings which discovered that one contractor received an advance payment of $53M in 2018 from the Ministry of Education for the construction of St. Rose’s High School and during the time of reporting in September 2019, the site was abandoned and no construction works had commenced.
He indicated that the Service Division is there to prevent similar occurrences happening in the future.
According to Patterson, the respective Ministries and agencies are expected to submit their project proposals/plans to the Service Division prior to embarking on the tendering process. The division is the tasked with offering comments for adjustments, if any.
