Five times defending Champions Guyana Jaguars departed from the Cheddie Jagan International Airport at 05:35hrs yesterday to compete in the Professional Cricket League Regional Four-Day Tournament.
The team selected is a very good one and includes debut pacer Nial Smith and off-spinning all-rounder Kevin Sinclair who both participated in last year’s Regional Super50.
The Jaguars will begin the defence of their title when they face-off with host Leeward Islands at the Sir Vivian Richards ground in North Sound, Antigua from Thursday.
When the teams last clashed in Antigua, the Leewards made 182 as Shepherd had 4-36, while Singh’s 90 rallied Guyana for 289 before Leewards managed 138 with Permaul taking 5-57.
Set 31 to win Guyana reached 32-1 to win by nine wickets.
The Guyanese then journey to Barbados for their second round game from January 16-19, before returning home to battle Trinidad & Tobago at Providence from January 23-26.
The Leon Johnson led side face Jamaica at Providence from February 6-9 before heading to Grenada to oppose the Windward Islands from February 13-16 to end the first half of the 10-match round-robin ‘home and away’ tournament.
In March last year, Johnson won his country’s fifth successive titles (2015-2019); one more than Tamar Lambert’ four and equaled Jamaica’s five-year run from 2008-2012 after Chris Gayle led Jamaica in 2008.
Another tittle this year will set a new record for most consecutive wins and give Guyana their 12th First-Class title since Rohan Kanhai led them to their first in 1973.
Guyana Jaguars: Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Leon Johnson (Captain), Christopher Barnwell, Vishaul Singh, Devendra Bishoo, Tevin Imlach, Keon Joseph, Raymon Reifer, Anthony Bramble, Veerasammy Permaul, Nial Smith and Kevin Sinclair: Esuan Crandon (Head Coach), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Assistant Coach/Manager), Neil Barry (Physiotherapist).
Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul has been selected for the three ODIs and three T20s against Ireland and will be unavailable for the first two matches since the last T20 will be played on January 19.
However, Romario Shepherd has been selected for ODI series which concludes on January 12 and should join the team for their second round match in Barbados.
