DEAR EDITOR,
There are some news items related to the Mabaruma Sub-Region in two of the daily papers. One article carried a report from Minister Patterson in regard to the Solar Panel at Mabaruma. The second news article discusses impressions and views of the Regional Executive Officer of residents who have to wait until the launching of political activity to highlight positives/ lack of in the Region. Why can’t this same Information be fed to the residents throughout the year in a timely and respectful manner?
Notwithstanding this, there have been some positive developments in Mabaruma sub Region; however, the list of happiness remains elusive. For instance, there is a deafening silence on the flow of information between the regional administration and the people. There is an inability to find and employ competent persons to manage the few administrative positions in the Region. In this confusion, the residents ponder what the future holds for them. For example, the community held its breath with the overdue news of the mini-hydro scheme at Hosororo and the solar farm at Khan Hill in Mabaruma.
Nevertheless, information is scant on these projects, which leads to speculations and misinformation with some persons saying that there is a danger that these projects could end up like a proverbial “white elephants.” There are promises to address these projects in the New Year. Does this tune sound familiar?
Efforts to introduce the cultivation and processing of spices, namely turmeric, black pepper, and ginger, have achieved limited success. These entrepreneur-oriented activities are noble since they seek to create employment and generate income within the community of Hosororo. Sadly, enough it appears to be a top-down administrative process with little input from the villagers. It is discomforting to see a transformative agricultural project heading for failure and with it another missed opportunity for the economic transformation of the village and the sub-region. Both political parties have addressed in a piecemeal manner. These two issues are the inadequate supply of water in Hosororo and the surrounding areas. For example, Wauna, a satellite village, is supplied with water from Hosororo. It is, therefore, logical to severe Wauna water supply from Hosororo and reverts to supplying Wauna with potable water from a source in that community? Judging from the constant need to replace/repair the pump at the water station at Wauna, the persons employed to manage these vital pieces of equipment are lacking responsibility to be both implicit and or explicit. Effective communication brings about positive changes in society.
