Ten-time Guyana Open Golf Champion Avinash Persaud said he is confident of doing well at higher levels. Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Persaud stated that after competing in the Jamaica Open in December, he has gained a wealth of experience and is better prepared for other overseas engagements.
Persaud was the lone Guyanese among golfers from the United States of America, Canada, Antigua and the host nation that participated in the Jamaica Open which was held in December; he finished 14th overall out of 96 golfers in the three-day tournament.
Persaud said that the tournament was of a high standard and one of the challenges he faced was to play on the greens (turf). “I never played or practiced on the greens so this was the toughest part for me competing there. However, my ball striking was good and the guys there were impressed with me,” he added.
“The experience was great, it has helped me to improve on certain aspects of my game and I am better equipped to compete at higher levels.”
Persaud feels that Guyana needs similar facilities (greens) so the players here can improve and excel in overseas tournaments, adding that he will share his experience with his local counterparts.
Persaud who practice twice a week, indicated that 2019 was very good year for him and he is looking forward to compete in more overseas tournaments, and has his sights set on the Trinidad and Tobago open which is slated for March, the Barbados open and the Suriname open where he won the overall gross title in 2019.
“I am confident of doing well in these tournaments, I know what to expect, I am now in a better position to manage my game,” he posited.
The Guyana Open champion has urged fellow local golfers to continue working hard on their game and stressed on the importance of being mentally tough, stating that this helps with consistency which plays an important role in individual development.
The Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) has staged a large number of tournaments in 2019 and Persaud indicated that he is pleased with the efforts of the executive, especially the President Aleem Hussain.
“In order for the players to develop and excel at higher levels, they must play on a consistent basis and the LGC has ensured that the players are constantly occupied in tournaments.”
Persaud also won the Lusignan Open among other tournaments in 2019 and has expressed gratitude to the Bulkan family for their sponsorship.
