The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) and some key sponsors will stage the
2020 edition of the National Senior, Junior and Cadet Championships.The events will kick start the GTTA year of activities and they are scheduled for the 17th to 19thand 24th to 26th of this month at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue.
The junior and cadet championships will engage boys and girls in the under-18 and under-16 age groups with a novices’ component, while the seniors’ competition will engage men and women in addition to the under-21 males and females, and B and C classes’ components.
The national championship is the premier domestic tournament and it serves as a key component for establishing rankings and selection systems.
With the continental qualification event for Tokyo’s XXXII Olympiad scheduled for the 15th to 19th April, the GTTA are expediting the completion of
the National Championship for earlier this year.
The Caribbean junior and cadet championships are scheduled for this March and the Caribbean Senior Championships will be contested from April 2nd to 8th in Havana, Cuba. The Caribbean seniors will also be used as the qualification event for the 2021 World Table Tennis Championships scheduled for Houston, Texas, USA.Senior National Championships
The senior edition of the men’s category truly offers up a treat for table tennis fans given the competitiveness of the current lineup of male players.
This division will see current National Champion and 2018 Caribbean Men’s Singles bronze medalist Christopher Franklin facing the likes of the inform and hungry 2018 Caribbean under-21 Champion and 2019 Caribbean under 21 silver me
dalist; men’s singles bronze medalist; Shemar Britton, former national champion Nigel Bryan, Joel Alleyne , Elishaba Johnson, Miguel Wong, veteran Colin France, Orin Hickerson, Jonathan Sankar and Edinho Lewis along with the young brigade who would be making their claim to the throne.
Current national women’s champion Natalie Cummings in the absence of Chelsea Edghill and Trenace Lowe will face stern challenges from Jody-Ann Blake, Priscilla Greaves, Neveah Clarkston, Thuraia Thomas, Nhecki McCrae, Crystal Melville, Abigail Martin and Jasmine Billingy, among others.While the B Class will see the likes of Warren Hacksaw, Devon Richmond, Levi Percival, Remy Taitt, Xen Goliath, Krystian Sahadeo, Maurice Cummings, Shavin Greene, Raynor Anderson, Isaiah Layne and Jonathan Van Lange.

Current national Junior boys’ Champion Jonathan Van Lange, Jamal Nicholas, Isaiah Layne, Colin Wong, Kaysan Ninvalle, Yeudistir Persaud, Terrence Rausch, Krystian Sahadeo, Dhanesh Persaud, Peter Persaud, Curtis McCrae, Ajay Persaud, Uriel Isadore, Kyle Chung, Ebo McNeil, Malaki Moore, Andell Austin, Narren Persaud, Salim Rahim, Jaswan Seenarine, Rhys Belle, Adrian Melville, Tyler Orderson, Christopher Barrow and Joshua Lucas among others will be staking their claim to the throne.
In the girls’ category, current national under-18 champion Thuraia Thomas will be hard pressed against with challenges from Neveah Clarkston, Crystal Melville, Abigail Martin, Jasmine Billingy, Akira Watson, Samara Sukhai along with new talents Lisana Ramscindo, Sufah & Samirah Burrowes, Alana Gouveia and Upha Hackett.There is a plethora of upcoming and talented players with loads of potential in the local table tennis arena in the respective categories and it will make for a competitive National Championships that will be filled with key rivalries and excitement.
