Dear Editor,
The prime ministerial candidate for Change Guyana party, Mr. Nigel Hinds, has replied to a statement of mine in my column of December 23 in which I indicated that I have documents on his political mistakes that his detractors could use to embarrass him.
Hinds’ reply will certainly raise questions about his eligibility to hold high, political office. Here is Hinds’ interpretation of my assertion that I have documents on his political mistakes; “… about having personal emails with harmful content, refer to having documents of embarrassing political mistakes of someone; that columnist is implicitly and creatively disparaging that person and telling the public not to support the individual, and it has the same impact as disclosing the purported embarrassing political mistakes, whether it exists or not.
“And there is no difference between claiming to have harmful documents about someone and damaging someone’s reputation using falsehoods.”
Hinds has a dangerous imagination, which, in my opinion, disqualifies him from being elected. Nowhere in that statement of mine, did I refer to any specific document and its harmful or innocuous nature. Secondly, how does he know the information I have contains falsehoods? They do not. They contain publicly published words of Hinds himself.
Secondly, it is not my concern and it is not the concern of any journalist or editor on how factual reporting will affect a candidate’s acceptance by the electorate. That is not my obligation to Mr. Hinds. I will offer the public below information that Mr. Hinds made public that I think the nation ought to know, since the information relates to a man who wants to be prime minister.
Here now are the documents Hinds has requested that I make public. All the information here is in the public domain. First, Hinds was the PNC’s representative on a committee set up by GECOM at the request of the PNC to reexamine the statements of poll for the 2011 elections which the PNC claimed was rigged. To date, Hinds has failed to tell the Guyanese people what he found and if what he found made the 2011 poll a fraudulent one.
Secondly, Hinds and I had a series of exchange in the month of November in 2012, in which the contents were available to dozens of others who were on the string with me and Hinds. So it was not a personal, confidential exchange. Because of my criticism of Rupert Roopnaraine and Joycelyn , Hinds accused me of psychological illness and being unfit to be a columnist. He accused me of multi personality disorder. I didn’t know Hinds had left the profession of accountancy and had studied psychiatry.
In those 2012 debates on the email string, this is what Hinds wrote of David Granger; “We have to be patient with David Granger, he is a challenging study as the leader of a political party or group, many of us believe that David is an excellent strategist – losing a few battles to win the war is how I assess the APNU leader.” In May 2017, Hinds wrote in KN an emotional panegyric of Bharrat Jagdeo and viciously condemned me for years of criticism of the Jagdeo presidency. I will not offer quotes from the letter but suffice it to say it is a sycophantic embrace of Jagdeo, describing the phenomenal qualities of the former president. The letter can be Googled. It is dated May 25, 2017, captioned, “The enumeration of Freddie Kissoon’s attack on Jagdeo’s character.”
Fast forward the tape to 2019. Mr. Hinds is involved in a political process to stop the election of Granger as president and replace him with Robert Badal and to stop Mr. Jagdeo and the PPP and make Mr. Badal the president. I am kindly asking Hinds if what I reported here are falsehoods designed to damage his character. I am kindly asking him if he thinks he owes me an apology.
Finally, Hinds calls into question his intellectual ability when he wrote the following words in response to me; “What if I have made mistakes, has anyone not made mistakes? “Why a long letter on me shouting down that I intend to vilify him by publishing his mistakes? Since we all make mistakes, let’s have a debate on mistakes but do not accuse others of conspiracies for simply pointing out your mistakes. This makes absolutely no sense. It is irrational and illogical.
Finally, in that very column that Hinds is ranting about, I did say I support his party “Change Guyana” and the other small parties. After Hinds’ vicious display of intolerance, I am having doubts.
